Banelec Macmillan Coffee Morning is Huge Success

Our Breakfast Networking event and Macmillan Coffee Morning hosted on Friday 29^th September raised a grand total of £1,450 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The support received from our fellow members was amazing and we are very grateful for their donations.

Dudley South MP Mike Wood also attended the event to support local businesses and Macmillan. He did a short speech during the networking morning about manufacturing and exporting, and its importance to our local businesses. He even stuck around to enjoy a slice of cakes and bid in our sealed bids auction.

General Manager, Jennie Banner said; We are really happy with the turnout, it was worth every minute of organising. We couldnt have asked for better support from the local businesses and our suppliers.

Its amazing to see how much people are willing to donate for such a great cause; people were very generous and it was great to see MP Mike Wood supporting the manufacturing industry in the area while helping out this amazing charity.

We received donations for prizes from lots of local businesses, including; Full Throttle Raceway (Stourbridge), Halfpenny Green Vineyard, Harvester, Pure Gym, Black Country Living Museum, Green Duck Brewery, Bartec, David Lloyd, Gala Events, Wolverhampton Grand Theatre and Simmis Café (Brierley Hill).

Banelec take on an Apprentice

Banelec are happy to announce that we have recently taken on an apprentice at our premise in Brierley Hill. This opportunity has arisen over the last couple of month as we have considered ways to expand the business and offer the younger generation of today a brilliant opportunity to develop trade skills.

Aaron Heathcock joined the Banelec on 31^st July 2017 and has already learnt a lot about what our engineers do in the workshop. In just his first few weeks we have already had him laying out back plates for our control panels, taking into consideration the wiring of the components.

Aaron is 16 years of age and has made the decision to learn a trade, and hopes to progress into a career in the electrical engineering field. It sounds like he may even want to follow in our Managing Directors footsteps and have his own business one day.

He will start his education in September after a month of hands on experience in our workshop learning first hand from the amazing team we have here. Things are already looking promising as he is eager to learn and is willing to take on any challenge we present him with.

Banelec set new standard for safety in aerospace manufacturing

Banelec has designed and manufactured a cutting-edge system that lifts and rotates fan case units for aircraft, ensuring the safety of engineers and minimizing the risk of damage to the equipment. This innovative solution was the result of a collaboration with a leading aircraft manufacturer, who sought a streamlined and safe method for handling fan case units during construction and finishing.

Fan case units play a critical role in aircraft engines, directing airflow and providing thrust. However, their large and heavy nature poses significant challenges for engineers working on them. Ensuring the safety of workers at different heights within the fan case was of utmost importance, leading to the demand for a technologically advanced solution.

Banelec took on the challenge and worked closely with the client to understand their specific needs and challenges. After a thorough analysis of existing processes and equipment, we proposed a system that could lift and rotate fan case units with precision and efficiency. The system, powered by electric jacks, was designed with safety as the top priority, allowing for customisable rotation and precise lifting and lowering capabilities.

The system, with three jacks positioned equal distances apart, featuring individual electrical control panels that work in unison to manipulate the system as needed, integrated with user-friendly interface allows operators to control the lifting and rotating process effortlessly using a radio control system, enhancing overall safety and efficiency.

Once the system was developed, Banelec collaborated with the client to seamlessly install and integrate it into their existing processes. The installation was executed efficiently, with minimal disruption to the client’s operations. Notably, this installation marked the first use of electric powered jacks within the flow line at the leading aircraft manufacturer, with plans for further installations in the near future.

The electric powered jacks provided precise and smooth lifting and rotating capabilities, reducing the risk of equipment damage and enhancing worker safety.

Banelec’s innovative solution not only addressed the client’s specific needs but also set a new standard for safely handling and maneuvering fan case units in the aerospace industry. This successful project solidified Banelec’s reputation as a leader in engineering and manufacturing solutions for various industries, highlighting their commitment to innovation and excellence.

Banelec branching into rental contracts

Banelec are branching into rental contracts; supporting customers with reliable control systems and machinery

With increased demand for extended warranties on products and machinery, Banelec are offering a new rental service in which they supply equipment and machinery on a contractual basis.

In the current uncertain times where companies are questioning their levels of investment, rental contracts like this offer customers the equipment they need to meet demand but with spreading the cost for financial security and cash flow. Banelec can offer the equipment required and are there to provide support and maintenance as the need arises.

Banelec can design and supply equipment, from a small safe or hazardous area control system, up to a full-scale factory automation or crane system complete with electrical controls and all software and programming requirements including robots, HMI’s etc.

So whether it is a hazardous area control system, a full-scale crane or part of an automation system; we can design, manufacture, install, commission and ensure the system is maintained as part of an agreed contract.

The contract would also include a suitable supply of spare parts to be kept by the customer in case of a breakdown, call outs and repairs to be carried out when required to ensure customer satisfaction and regular services to ensure the system is running efficiently and effectively.

In the near future, PLC providers are looking to introduce annual subscription fees, so through a rental contract with Banelec this will be dealt with on your behalf. Contracts where software is involved, Banelec shall ensure it is up to date and that the customer receives full advantage of the latest innovations.

Banelec Sponsor It's A Knockout in Memory of MD's Nephew

This summer Banelec are sponsoring It’s a Knockout in memory of Managing Director, Dean Banner’s nephew Daniel Banner, who sadly passed away Easter 2017.

Daniel was like any other cheeky, clever, caring, mischievous 12-year-old boy; fit and healthy until he became ill at the end of January 2017, when he appeared to have a chest infection and was treated accordingly. However, following a lack of response to treatment he was admitted to Russells Hall hospital on 12th February; and moved to Stoke when his health continued to deteriorate; where he was put on an oscillator but again without responding as expected.

He was then transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and initially put on lung bypass and then heart and lung bypass. During this time, it was discovered that Daniel had Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) and began chemotherapy alongside his other treatments. Unfortunately, the lymphoma attacked his lungs and took away his ability to breath. The family sadly lost Daniel on Easter Sunday, 16th April 2017, just 11 weeks after first becoming ill.

Since Daniel’s passing, family and friends have raised over £18,000 in his memory, which has been donated to a variety of causes.

It’s a Knockout will take place at The Kingswinford School, on Saturday 8th June 2019, the gates will open at 09:30am, with the children’s event starting at 10.30 am and the adults beginning at approximately 1.00pm. The event will run until approximately 4.30 pm.

This will be the second year the event has taken place, following its huge success last summer when it raised £6,161.20 profit.

Banelec revolutionises manufacturing process for Aerospace manufacturer

Banelec was recently approached by a customer in need of a complete machining cell solution for the continuous manufacture of ejector seat shafts. Tasked with designing, constructing, creating software for, installing, and commissioning the entire system, Banelec rose to the challenge and delivered spectacular results that have left the customer delighted.

The customer, a prestigious aerospace ejector seat manufacturer who had been relying on manual labour for decades, was venturing into the realm of robotics for the first time. Banelec was entrusted with designing both the electrical and mechanical components of the project, as well as developing the necessary software to bring the system to life.

The machining cell designed by Banelec features a multi-process operation that streamlines the manufacturing process. A CNC machine is used for the initial procedure, after which the component is unloaded by a robot and placed on a custom 2-tier conveyor system. While the first component is being processed, another CNC machine completes the final procedure, and the robot seamlessly transfers the component to the upper tier of the conveyor. This process continues in a continuous loop, ensuring efficiency and precision throughout the manufacturing process.

One of the key challenges in the project was to optimise space and cost efficiency. Initially, the customer believed that two robot cells would be necessary, doubling the expense and space required for the system. However, Banelec's expert engineers utilised advanced robot modelling and 3D CAD software to devise a solution that could achieve the desired outcome within a single cell using a single robot and a unique 2-tier conveyor system.

Every aspect of the design process, including the mechanical design of the conveyor system, was meticulously overseen by Banelec's team of experts. The mechanical designer developed the concept and produced detailed drawings using in-house design software, while the construction of the conveyor system was executed by skilled mechanical engineers. The entire installation process was carried out by Banelec's team, from fitting the components on-site to electrically connecting the system and ensuring proper functionality.

The successful completion of this custom machining cell project has significantly enhanced the productivity, efficiency, and safety of the customer's manufacturing process. Banelec's expertise in mechanical design and automation has paved the way for future turn-key projects, showcasing the company's innovation and commitment to delivering exceptional solutions to its customers.

The new stickers use our traditional Banelec blue and signature slogan in a new crisp, sophisticated design.

Our old sticker design just wasn't as nice as our new shiny one.

Banelec attend NDA Supply Chain Event in Telford

Banelec experienced great success networking at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Supply Chain event held at the Telford's International Centre on Thursday, 16th January 2025. The event brought together key players in the nuclear decommissioning industry, providing a valuable opportunity for professionals to connect, share insights, and explore potential partnerships.

Our stand showcased our innovative electrical engineering solutions tailored for nuclear decommissioning projects; with networking being conducted by Banelec Business Development Engineer, Steve Smith, and Buyer, Matthew Gurney, who both spoke very positively about the event.

One of the highlights of the event was informative presentations on the sector, the supply chain and procurement within the nuclear industry. Our Banelec representatives had many in-depth discussions about what we do and made a number of great contacts in the sector, leading to much engagment and valuable connections.

Our event is on 29th September and is going to coincide with our planned Macmillan Coffee Morning to help raise money for a worthy cause. This means that there will also be cake available on the day.

The Macmillan event will last later into the afternoon and we hope to raise a good amount of money for a charity that does so much good.

Memory Walk in Aid of Alzheimer's Society

The team at Banelec are organising a Memory Walk in aid of Alzheimer's Society on Saturday 5th October.

Alzheimers and dementia affect so many lives, touching most of of us in one way or another. Whether it's a relative, friend or friend of a friend; many of us have seen the turmoil this disease causes. That is why we are holding our own walk to raise funds for Alzheimer's Society.

Join our walk for a world without dementia and help fund vital research into a cure. Help us make a difference and change lives for the better. Whether you want to participate in the walk, sponsor the team or share our event and message with your family and friends; there's plenty of ways you can help improve the lives of those suffering with dementia.

The walk will begin at the Rose and Crown, Wordsley at 11am. The route is around 10km / 6miles along canal towpath in the local area. The route is relatively flat and easy going, but ensure you dress for comfort. Cosy joggers and walking shoes suggested.

Banelec are happy to announce that we have been collaborating with many of the other Made in the Midlands members on various projects over the period we have been a gold member.

Sertec are the latest member of the Made in the Midlands family we have had the pleasure to work with since joining the networking circuit nearly 3 years ago. We are currently carrying out some upgrades on existing robot cells at their Midlands based premises. In recent years we have worked closely alongside other MIM members and local companies on various automation and robotics projects and look forward to working on more in the future.

Banelec design system for UK's largest rail stocking facility

In an exciting collaboration, Banelec and Britcon have come together to design and install a cutting-edge £10-million rail stocking facility for British Steel in Scunthorpe. This state-of-the-art hub is the largest of its kind in the country, with the capacity to hold approximately 25,000 tonnes of 108m finished rail.

The project kicked off with a thorough consultation involving Banelec, Britcon, and British Steel to fully grasp the specific requirements and objectives of the rail stocking facility. It was imperative to create a system that could efficiently handle the complex operations of stocking and distributing rail components while prioritising safety and productivity.

The primary focus was to engineer a custom control solution that would enable the safe and efficient loading and unloading of rolling stock at the new storage facility. Considering the vast quantity of rails slated for temporary storage, each measuring 108m in length, 11 hoist units were outfitted with electro-magnets capable of lifting 4 lengths of rail with each lift. Employing variable speed drives to minimize shock loading and facilitate soft acceleration and deceleration movements, the system operates seamlessly to maximise efficiency.

The hoist and traverse motions are meticulously monitored via absolute encoders, allowing the PLC system to continually track positions and adjust speeds as needed for proper alignment. The comprehensive installation process, which spanned several months and endured all types of weather conditions, involved the placement of hoists, master control panel, magnet panels, energy chain systems, cabling, and containment with precision to meet both the scheduled delivery date and the allocated budget. Remarkably, the meticulous planning was to such a high standard that no steelwork drilling was necessary on-site.

Throughout the installation phase, Banelec and Britcon maintained constant communication with British Steel to provide regular progress updates and promptly address any concerns that surfaced. This transparent and collaborative approach played a pivotal role in the seamless execution of the project, ultimately resulting in the satisfaction of all stakeholders involved.

The visionary partnership between Banelec and Britcon exemplifies the power of teamwork and innovation in delivering state-of-the-art solutions for the construction and civil engineering sectors. As the largest rail stocking facility in the nation, this project sets a new benchmark for excellence in infrastructure development, paving the way for future advancements in the industry.

Local MP to visit Banelec to celebrate 25 years in Business

Following a recent article published in the Stourbridge news celebrating Banelec’s 25^th year in business, we have proudly received a letter of commendation and request to visit from Local MP, Cat Eccles.

The letter recognises the growth of the business over the last 25 years and highlights how impressed the Labour MP is to learn about the work we have conducted with major global clients such as Rolls Royce Plc, Jaguar Land Rover and BP.

With a factory tour scheduled for early August, we are looking forward to hosting the Stourbridge MP and showcasing what we do, highlighting first-hand the innovation and dedication that has driven our success over the last quarter of a century.

We hope this visit will be instrumental in showing our MP what the local industry still has to offer and allow her better understanding of how policymakers like herself can support us and businesses like ourselves moving forward.

From its humble beginnings, as a small company designing and manufacturing electrical control panels, we now design and develop full systems for the manufacturing industry – from electrical controls to full conveyor systems, developing software for robotics, and designing new innovative solutions our customers can rely on.

- We have designed and manufactured Fan Case Lifters for a leading aircraft engine manufacturer in the Aerospace industry – The first of its kind, setting a new safety standard for the industry.

Banelec Awarded Safety Accreditation

Banelec has been awarded accreditation from Alcumus SafeContractor; this achievement gives merit to our excellent practice of health and safety in the workplace.

Through gaining this accreditation it is hoped that we will enhance our ability to win new contracts and prove our commitment to safe practice in the workplace.

Banelec Build to UL Safety Standards

Banelec are set to break into the American market as their engineers have just completed phase 1 of gaining UL certification for their control panels. This will allow the company to be one of the very few in the UK who are able to design, build and self-certify to UL standards.

The first phase completed on Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th November covered UL508A, which is the UL standard for safety which covers the companies design and build of industrial control panels for use in safe areas.

To be UL approved shows that Banelec build its panels to specific requirements regards to standards for safety set by UL. The introduction of this for the company means that we will be able to offer our standard safe area panels to an American consumer.

Banelec get QAN/QAR Qualification

Banelec are proud to announce that they recently received QAN / QAR qualification. We have worked in hazardous area control systems for many years, building for many of the well known names in the industry. In the past customers have complained that the process was too lengthy because the design and production facilities were all based abroad which increased lead times.

We saw this as an opportunity to partner with Bartec and were invited to visit Bartecs facilities in Norway. After showing competent knowledge and skills, Bartec gave us permission to build into their control panels and certify ourselves in house.

This gives us much more flexibility to offer customers a smoother service from design, build, test and certify.

However following customer feedback it became clear that we could go one step further. Full audits were performed by Intertek, who check all of the quality systems that we have in place; including Ex systems.

Banelec passed the QAN/QAR audits and gained ATEX and IECEX accreditation as a competent accredited provider to the industry.

Our processes make us the fastest supplier in the market. We can now stock, drill and turnaround complete systems very efficiently and the whole process is done at our UK facility.

Banelec Conveyor Installation Success

Banelec recently undertook a challenging project to complete installation work for a large parcel distributor at three sites across the United Kingdom, in a tight time frame. The project involved the installation of a parcel conveyor system at each site, which included fitting conveyors, control panels, trunking, and electrical wiring. The short window in which to complete all three installations was a challenge, but one that Banelec willingly accepted.

Installation and Testing Process
Before starting the installation work, our engineers conducted a comprehensive assessment of the sites to understand the layout requirements. The installation process began with fitting the control panels in strategic positions within the facilities, ensuring easy access for operators at all times. The conveyors were then strategically placed to optimise the flow of parcels through the distribution centres, maximizing efficiency and productivity.

Once the conveyors were in place, trunking was carefully mounted down the centre of the conveyor to prepare for the running of cables. Our skilled electricians meticulously wired the entire system using high-quality materials and following industry best practices to ensure optimal performance. The installation was completed with a focus on neatness and professionalism, making maintenance and repairs easier in the future.

After the cables were run and the system was fully wired, our engineers conducted point to point testing and visual inspections to ensure everything was in order. Regular communication with the customer throughout the installation process allowed for updates on progress and adjustments as needed to meet deadlines and deliver a fully functional conveyor system that met the client's expectations.

Successful Completion and Client Satisfaction
After several weeks of hard work, Banelec successfully completed the installation of the parcel conveyor system at all three sites within the five-week time frame. The client was impressed with the quality of the work and the professionalism demonstrated by our team throughout the project.

Banelec go green for Mental Health Awareness Week

The team at Banelec held a wear green to work day today, Friday 17th May; all to raise awareness for Mental Health.

It was great to see the whole team take part; enjoy a cuppa and a cake and have a little natter about mental health and the part it plays in the life of many people, friends, colleagues and family members. We had a member of the West Midlands Combined Authority come in and discuss their campaign, This is Me which aims to support organisations support their work force and provide them with the tools to change cultures around mental health. Banelec are proud to be supporting such a worthy campaign.

Here at Banelec we love to support a good cause, especially if we can eat cake and raise money while we're doing it. We raised £105, which we will be donating to MIND.

Banelec - The future of light vehicle manufacturing

Banelec have joined the Supply Chain Transition programme for the future of light vehicle manufacturing.

The programme will give Banelec the opportunity to liaise with buyers and specialists in this ever-expanding industry. This fully funded programme, delivered by C&W Business Solutions, The West Midlands Growth Company and the Finditin Network has been created to provide help for SMEs in the West Midlands to diversify their customer base by winning new orders in growing areas of economy.

Through this programme Banelec will have access to workshops, 1-2-1 support from specialists in the area, have site visits and be invited to meet the buyer events.

Following his meeting with a Supply Chain Specialist from C&W Business Solutions in October to discuss the programme, Steve Smith, Business Development Manager from Banelec said, "I think this is a great opportunity for Banelec to be involved with the future of light vehicle manufacturing. Our decades of experience manufacturing equipment for the rail and automotive industries put us in a great position to develop new equipment and machines to produce LEVs and be involved in the design of VLR infrastructure.”

Banelec Seeking Electrical Design Engineer

A position has become available for an electrical design engineer at our premises in Brierley Hill.

The role will be to help design electrical control systems and produce electrical schematics using AutoCAD Electrical. The position primarily involves creating the design and schematics, however it is a flexible role which could involve the initial site visit to realise the customers specification.

We design and produce electrical control systems for the offshore and automotive industries, from conveyor systems, cranes and lifting equipment, to full production lines including robotics. We are looking for a team player to join our already excellent team at Banelec and help help improve the smooth flow of productivity for our growing business.

Banelec take on new Graduate

Banelec have just taken on a graduate from Aston University. Amrit Grewal has just completed his Master level studies in Wireless Communications and Networking.

His interests and experience lie in system designs and remote monitoring devices. His areas of specialism include; IoT devices, PCB Design, electrical and analogue design.

He is excited to apply and develop his skills in relation to the hazardous area market and explosion proof control panels. Amrit said, Having developed the necessary skills within Engineering design, I felt it would be a fantastic opportunity to both develop those skills in new dimensions and contribute towards the challenging solutions required ensuring the highest reward of job satisfaction.

He is looking forward to advancing his knowledge with the company and learning from our Managing Director Dean Banner.

After completing his first full week with Banelec he is confident he is going to have a rewarding future with the company, saying; I can see this providing me with a great set of skills from project management to developing customer relations and aiming to deliver efficient and effective solutions to the consumer.

Some interesting facts about the graduate During Amrits time at secondary school he achieved a gold medal in Discus at the Country Championships and won The Kings Apprentice generating £245 for charity.
